West Rand police make 376 arrests in one week

Police on the West Rand commended for making close to 400 arrests for serious crimes in just one week.

The police are proud to announce that 376 arrests were made for serious crimes in just one week across the 13 police stations in the West Rand Cluster.

The arrests were made between the Monday, 3 July and Sunday, 9 July.

“The arrests came with excellent seizures of stolen and hijacked motor vehicles, unlicensed firearms and ammunition,” confirmed Captain Appel Ernst, Randfontein Police spokesperson.

She said various crime prevention and intelligence-driven operations throughout the cluster contributed to these successes.

Crimes which landed the suspects behind bars include murder, armed robbery, business robbery, hijacking, drunken driving, sexual offences, rape, housebreaking and theft, possession of suspected stolen goods, defeating the ends of justice, reckless and negligent driving, illegal mining, fraud, possession of stolen property and possession of gold-bearing materials.

Police also arrested suspects for driving under the influence of alcohol and being in possession of drugs as well as for liquor-related offences. A number of undocumented persons were also detained.

In Westonaria, for instance, two drug busts resulted in the recovery of drugs with a street value of approximately R360 000. Suspects were also apprehended.

Major General Anna Mateisi, the West Rand Cluster commander, applauded the members for their diligence, professionalism and commitment to the area.

“The West Rand Community can rest assured that, with their support, the men and women in blue in this Cluster will not allow the criminal elements to thrive. Together, we will make a difference,” she said.
