Raca ready for this year’s festival

This year Raca has decided to add a chess category to the programme.

The Randfontein Arts and Culture Association (Raca) festival is just around the corner and the organisers believe that this year’s event will be one for the books.

As from 1 August, thousands of participants will be performing at this spectacular month-long event.

The Raca Eisteddfod started in 2010, with 1 000 entries in different categories. Six hundred of these entries were from Randfontein High School (RHS) alone.

In 2016, they had close to 10 000 entries and more than 45 000 people walking through their gates in a month.

Raca’s project manager, Rodney Nimmo, told the Herald that the festival was started because of a perceived need for another performance platform in Gauteng. The festival also helps individuals to prepare for other competitions such as the Eisteddfod.

“The Raca festival also helps participants to get noticed by important people in the performance industry. The festival also makes use of many well-known artists, among them Bertha le Roux, Estie Pienaar, Willie Strauss, and Steven Kotze,” said Rodney.

Raca teaches participants to express emotion, helps them become independent and responsible and thus become good prefects, and boosts their confidence.

Raca’s vision is to create a festive environment for both the participants and the spectators, and Rodney and his team have big dreams for the festival.

“We want to expand the festival so that it can eventually be hosted in different satellite areas,” said Rodney.

The Raca festival is open to everyone in Gauteng, but the only venue at present is at RHS.

There is a new category this year, namely chess. The other categories are:

• Dance

• Drama

• Vocal

• Instrumental

• Creative work

• Digital

This year’s Raca festival promises to be bigger and better than ever, and the organisers want to wish all the participants good luck. They’re very excited to see what the participants will have to offer this year.

The programme for the festival will be available at the gates as from 1 August and the whole community is invited to be part of this glamorous event.
