Man, 25, gets 10 years for attempted murder

Man in his mid 20s sentenced to 10 years in prison for attempted murder of acquaintance.

Bokang Mathetsa, 25, has been sentenced to 10 years in jail for attempting to commit murder last year.

Three years of his sentence were suspended for five years by the Westonaria Regional Court on Thursday, 22 June.

According to Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, Bekkersdal Police’s spokesperson, the incident occurred at about 3.15am on 4 September 2016.

“It is alleged the victim was driving along Raikaga Street in Simunye when he came across a group of men walking in the middle of the road. He could not get past, so he stopped to ask them to give him way. He realised that he knew one of the men in the group.

“As the victim was still negotiating his way through, the man known to him took out a knife and started stabbing him randomly. He sustained multiple stab wounds and was transported to the hospital for medical attention.

“A case of attempted murder was registered and shortly thereafter, the suspect was traced and arrested.”

Through investigation led by detective Constable Pakiso Shomang, the case was finalised with a conviction.

Lieutenant Colonel Albertos van Rooyen, acting station commander, applauded the constable for his good work.
