RPA Winter Charity Drive brings some sun to R’fontein

"Winter is a miserable time for many in our town and we are happy to be able to make a difference in our community,” said Joy.

The Randfontein Publicity Association’s (RPA) Winter Charity drive for 2017 was a huge success.

“Dozens of people benefited from the RPA Charity Drive this year and we are happy to have been able to make a difference to those less fortunate,” said Joy Hamann, RPA’s Publicity Officer.

Joy further said that they asked members of the public to knit squares for blankets during the month of May and the response was wonderful.

“Some people dropped off knitted and crocheted squares at the office and the knitting club that gets together at the Elna Shop in Kenneth Avenue provided us with dozens of squares,” she said.

RPA member, Magriet van der Hoven from Elite Needles Services, took it upon herself to join all the donated knitted squares to make up several blankets.

RPA member, Magriet van der Hoven from Elite Needle Services joined all the squares together and produced a number of blankets. These blankets, together with another one hundred that the RPA bought from local blanket manufacturer, Aranda, were distributed to various individuals and organisations, along with food parcels and bulk food supplies valued at R10 000 and funded by the RPA.

“Winter is a miserable time for many in our town and we are happy to be able to make a difference in our community,” said Joy.

“It’s impossible to help everyone in need and every year we try to give to different Non-profit Organisations and disadvantaged families in Mohlakeng, Toekomsrus and Randfontein central and rural areas,” she continued.

This year’s recipients were:

• LesediLa Mohlakeng, Care for the Aged: Blankets and bulk food for their Luncheon Club.

• AganangBagolo Ba Simunye, Care for the Aged: Blankets and bulk food for their Luncheon Club.

• MCSA Zenzele Early Childhood Development Centre: Blankets and bulk food for their feeding scheme.

• NG Welsyn: Blankets and food parcels. These are distributed to needy families in all areas.

• Church of the Nazarene: Bulk food and stationery for their Winter Bible Vacation Programme that takes place from 10 to 14 July in Toekomsrus.

Several individuals who make a living by going through other people’s garbage, collecting recyclable items, also received blankets and food parcels from the RPA, as well as needy families in and around Randfontein.
