Commuters beware! You are being targeted

It's said criminals are targeting commuters making use of public transport. Please keep your eyes peeled and be alert!

People making use of public transport seem to be more vulnerable than ever.

According to a statement released by Fidelity ADT, several incidents have recently been reported where people catching taxis from the airport have been robbed at intersections. Gautrain users are also said to have been mugged outside stations.

Sam Cretten, Community Development Manager for Fidelity ADT said, “According to incidents reported to the Bramley Police and Fidelity ADT, criminals have followed several passengers using metered cabs or Uber taxis from the airport and, while they’re stopped at intersections, pulled up behind them, walked up to the vehicle brandishing firearms and demanded that the passenger hands over their valuables. This has been particularly prolific at the intersection of Catherine Street and Grayston Road, in Sandton.

“Along with that, there have been several incidents where Gautrain users exit the stations and, while looking for a taxi or a lift, have been approached by armed criminals and robbed of their valuables.

“This often happens when people are on their phones or distracted as they leave the stations. They have valuable items exposed, bags not zipped up and are perfect targets for these opportunistic criminals lying in wait.

“Stay alert when exiting the station. Get off your phone and put your belongings away safely, out of sight. If you suspect an individual, seek help from the nearest security guard on duty,” she advised.

She said the same applies to taxi users and strongly urges passengers to keep an eye out for any suspicious vehicles that may be following them.

“Don’t become complacent just because you are in a taxi. Inform the driver of what has been happening at intersections and ask the driver to keep an eye out too. Put all valuables into the locked boot. If you suspect you are being followed, ask the driver to drive to the nearest police station,” she said.
