Theft out of motor vehicles and driveway hijackings remain a high risk according to the latest statistics released by the Sandton Police … and it could happen to you, right here in Randfontein, too.
Being aware of your surroundings and knowing how to respond if you find yourself in a hijacking situation is critical.
“The golden rule is to not antagonise the hijackers who are probably more scared than you are. You need to show them you are not a threat. Lift up your arms to show you have no weapon and will surrender. Use your left arm to undo your seatbelt and put your car in neutral gear,” said Steven Bronks, Community Development Manager for Fidelity ADT.
He also said not to turn off your car … leave it running and get out slowly.
“Try to angle your body sideways so you are not facing a firearm head-on. Also remember to protect your head with your arms and avoid direct eye contact with the hijackers, but try to take in as much information as possible, such as what they are wearing, and the sound of their voices. Most importantly, try to remain calm,” he said.
Bronks said there are seven golden rules to follow if you are held up:
• Remain calm
• Do not argue
• Do not make sudden gestures
• Avoid eye contact but try to remember what the hijacker looked like – identify and remember special features
• Comply with the hijacker’s demands (within reason)
• Try to get away from the area as quickly as possible
• Don’t be a hero – your life is worth more than your car!
