‘Drivers ferrying schoolkids to be extra cautious’

'Safety first when transporting schoolchildren' – Randfontein Education Transport Association orders its drivers.

The safety of schoolchildren being transported was top of the agenda at a recent meeting held by the Randfontein Education Transport Association at the Bondesio Hall.

The meeting was packed with minibus drivers from the association. Its aim was to discuss and highlight the safety of the schoolchildren they transport. The meeting was scheduled after rumours began circulating that children were being abducted after school in town and followed on from the horrific accident that occurred in April, when up to 20 schoolchildren died in a head-on collision between a taxi and a truck on the R25 between Bronkhorstpruit, Gauteng and Verena, Mpumalanga. It is said that some of the learners were burnt beyond recognition.

The form on which the driver’s particulars, route, school, child’s name and surname, a contact number and address should be recorded.

In attendance were Peter Tina, regional chairperson of the association, minibus drivers from the association, a representative of the Herald, and Monty Lazaro, the public relations officer of the taxi association.

Various suggestions were made at the meeting.
