This after they identified hoax awareness messages that went viral on the internet and social media applications namely Whatsapp and Facebook. With reference to the proliferate cases of crimes against women and children, these examples are some of the following are messages that has been spread.

One of the messages read: Children must be informed not to play in the streets and avoid to go to Spaza Shops.The writer of the message also said that he met with Inspector Khumalo from the police who is staying in his area. His informer told him that 20 children are needed in Mohlakeng this past weekend.

He continues by writing, parents must ensure safety of their children and that this kind of crime does not happen on this side of the West Rand. People must help. Don’t leave children alone, he pleaded.

Another message read, “Guys a school kid is missing in Mohlakano school. I have just received a call right now. Yesterday a car picked him up at the school gate. He is missing, police are searching for him as we speak.”

Captain Appel Ernst, Randfontein Police spokesperson says it is with great concern to inform communities not to be indulged by hoax awareness trails which distracts attention towards safety (by verifying the viral messages with police since at this juncture communities are scared/threatened by this situation.)

“The Randfontein Police condemns hoax awareness’s that are aimed at scaring communities and further humbly request the community to stay alert at all times and report all cases relating to crimes against women and children including those of missing persons.” says Captain Ernst.

In light of this information, the Station Commander of Randfontein Police Brigadier MJ Manamela hereby humbly request that parents, friends and above all, the community at large to be open eyes at all times and assist in situation of safety distraction and criminal acts.

Ernst added the police remains committed to combating crimes against vulnerable people.
