Truck set alight, driver injured in Zenzele

Police say incident is not linked to protest in Toekomsrus.

A truck was recently targeted, set alight and the driver assaulted in Zenzele, according to local police.

The truck, owned by a recycling company and transporting used tyres, was allegedly en route from Cooke 1 mine towards Westonaria.

Captain Appel Ernst, Randfontein Police’s spokesperson said the incident took place on Flower Street at about 11.30am on Wednesday, 24 May, but is not linked to the ongoing service delivery protest in Toekomsrus.

Ernst explained, “It is alleged the road was open when suddenly two men came out of Zenzele. They hurled stones and a brick at the approaching vehicle. The driver allegedly swerved to avoid damage, but he lost control and the vehicle overturned.

“It is further alleged that more suspects came out of Zenzele. The driver was assaulted with booted feet and the suspects took three cellular phones. They then set the truck on fire.

“Public order policing members were on scene quickly and arrested three suspects as soon as they arrived. The injured driver was transported to a local hospital for medical treatment.”
