Day four: Protests in Toekies still ongoing – 13 arrested

BREAKING: At least 13 people have been arrested as the Toekies service delivery protests enter Day 4.

Thursday, 25 May, marks the fourth consecutive day of the violent and destructive protest by furious residents of Toekomsrus regarding poor service delivery.

Captain Appel Ernst, Randfontein Police’s spokesperson, said this morning everything is calm at this stage but the police remain on the scene as looting continues.

“So far 13 people have been arrested,” Ernst said.

The Herald also spoke to a reliable source in Toekomsrus who said the situation there is extremely bad. He said that Pakistani and Somalian shops are being looted. According to him, the schools are now closed.

“The police remain on the scene and are shooting rubber bullets.” According to the source, one child was shot in the hip. He indicated that he believes the situation is out of control.

“We are not reaching any agreement with the relevant parties,” the source said.

When the Herald was on the scene on Monday many residents complained, and explained why they are protesting. One woman said Toekomsrus is always overlooked when the Rand West City Local Municipality implements benefits in other areas, like Mohlakeng.

The vandalism and burning of the municipal building on Monday is strongly condemned by most of the residents in the Toekomsrus community.
