PE’s Missionvale Care Centre gets a vital helping hand from water-saving Sunlight

In water scarce South Africa, every drop counts – and sometimes they count a lot. Sunlight was excited to donate two JoJo Tanks to PE’s Missionvale Care Centre, a provider of dignity to many in need.

With South Africa experiencing a devastating drought throughout 2016, Sunlight realised that too many South Africans were in desperate need of a sustainable way to access and manage their water. As part of a nation-wide effort to give back to disadvantaged and poor communities, the much needed Non-Profit Organisation that is the Missionvale Care Centre was identified as a community that would greatly benefit from Sunlight’s intervention.

The Care Centre reflects many religious denominations, and operates in the extremely poor township of Missionvale. It had humble beginnings, being started under a tree in 1988 by Sister Ethyl Normoyle. Today it touches the lives of many living in the township, especially the homeless and hungry, and a special focus is given to those living with HIV/AIDS. The centre’s mission is to be “at the heart of a sustainable and harmonious community with access to health, wellbeing and educational services delivered with love and care that will empower and enrich the lives of local people”.

One cannot have dignity without water; so in Sunlight’s view, our contribution will undoubtedly help those who rely on the Care Centre to achieve more dignity and a better quality of life.

As with other community engagement projects we’ve worked on throughout South Africa, Sunlight’s contribution of 2 JoJo Tanks (each holding 5000 litres of water) to the Centre will aid it in being able to meet the water needs of the people, and help with the growing of food in the vegetable garden. Sunlight is hopeful that the 270 young children who rely on the Care Centre will always have water to drink and to use for sanitary needs, and that the kitchen will have water for cooking.

We were humbled and grateful to install the 2 water tanks, and then hand them over to a representative of the Missionvale Care Centre.

Linda Van Oudheusden, Marketing Manager at Missionvale Care Centre had the following to say during the handover:

With these JoJo Tanks from Sunlight, we will be better placed to continue our work within the community. With the water restrictions currently being implemented, we found ourselves in a position last week where we were not able to provide meals and a means to keep the children hydrated. Thanks to Sunlight, we will have the additional water supply we require to take care of our vegetable gardens, ensure the children and the community have improved access to water whenever they are in our care.

Sunlight couldn’t be more proud of the good work South Africans are doing in challenging times, especially the Missionvale Care Centre. We are also grateful to be a part of it!
