Mayor’s right hand, still reaching for the stars

Caroline Setsiba, the right hand of Rand West Local Municipality Executive Mayor Mzi Khumalo received her Honours in Media Studies on Tuesday, 9 May, at Unisa.

Caroline, who is 55 years of age, can regularly be seen at all kinds of events in Randfontein, and believes in the power of education.

She started studying after Grade 12, and has achieved a number of qualifications, among them a Diploma in Public Relations at Allenby College, a BA degree, majoring in Communication and Politics at Unisa, and a Basic Film and Script-writing Certificate from Penguin Films.

Her employment history is an impressive one, extending from 1976, when she was an activist. She was the Regional Organiser of the African National Congress, (ANC), an ANC Regional Elections Administrator, a Communications Manager and even a General Nurse at St Giles Hospital.

Caroline Setsibe holds education close to her heart.

Caroline also did international work in December 2010, when she was part of a delegation of 20 South Africans who went to Palestine. In 2008, she travelled to America as an Educational Activist, and delivered a lecture toa number of community organisations, professors and educational institutes.

In France she was part of the Creative Industry Delegation to the Global Summit for Woman in June 2014. Besides all her experiences, Caroline is also an keen poet.

She describes herself as a social activist, a mentor, and a person that likes to lead as example. ” There is no end to education. You can start studying at any age. You empower yourself when you do so,” she said. She feels strongly that the youth should realise that they are the leaders of the future, and therefore equip themselves for those future roles.

She also explained that there is no barrier preventing the youth from studying – bursaries are available at numerous educational institutes.

Her daughter, Realeboga Setsibe, 22, is following in her mom’s footsteps. She said, “Having my mother as an academic by my side, motivates, drives and teaches me, especially how to focus.” Realeboga also said that her mom holds education close to her heart, but that she also gives back to the community.

Caroline believes that the Randfontein community and the youth should grow intellectually by educating themselves. This go-getter can also speak seven of the eleven official languages.

Besides all this, Caroline is a colourful character and loves dealing with people of all races and ages. She will be receiving an international award in the near future.
