Zenzele protest – the aftermath

The atmosphere is tense but quiet in the area at this stage - Captain Appel Ernst

On Tuesday, 9 May, protest action by the residents of the Zenzele informal settlement erupted, and vehicles were stoned and one truck was set alight.

Captain Appel Ernst, the Randfontein Police spokesperson, confirmed that the Zuurbekom Road past Zenzele, between Randfontein and Bekkersdal, was affected.

Randfontein Police’s station commander, Brigadier Mashole Manamela, then issued instructions to close the road.

An urgent meeting was called, and the Rand West Local Municipality Executive Mayor, Mzi Khumalo, addressed the disgruntled community.

Ernst went on to say that the Randfontein Police and other role players have been monitoring the area continuously since then. “The atmosphere is tense but quiet in the area at this stage,” she said.

Captain Ernst also assured the Randfontein community that the police are committed to ensuring the safety of all.

“We request residents to refrain from violence in any form. Communities are also urged to refrain from spreading unfounded rumours which result in public panic,” concluded Manamela.
