#FridayBiltongDay: Let’s get down to biltong business

André Kruger is the town's best beef biltong bloke.

This Friday, the Herald decided to do something a little different, so instead of #FridayBraaiDay, we’re doing #FridayBiltongDay.

The Herald interviewed biltong fundi, André Kruger, who has a biltong cart near Robinson Private Hospital.

André was born and bred in Randfontein and has lived in the town for 59 years. His alma maters are Laerskool Randfontein and Hoërskool Riebeeckrand.

André’s contract at the company he used to work for was terminated, leaving him without a job and having to fend for his wife and youngest child, aged 13, so he decided to take things into his own hands and start his own business.

He did this especially because of his age and how hard it is for persons close to retiring age to find work.

After losing his job, he had a food cart made for his biltong business. He said he got the idea from another vendor on Robert Broom Drive, who said it could be a worth-while investment if done right.

While André does not make his own biltong, he knows his onions when it comes to the all-South African snack and knows who to buy from and what to buy.

For him, a good piece of biltong needs to have a bit of moisture or a thick piece of yellow fat. In terms of the kind of biltong he likes and sells, he said you can never go wrong with beef.
