#ThrowBackThursday: Tambotie Mall one week young

WATCH: The Herald takes a look back at the official opening of Tambotie Mall just one week ago.

On 15 February 2016, Herald journalists were photographed on a piece of land that was being excavated at the lake on the corner of Homestead Avenue and R41 which had everyone guessing.

That spot is where Tambotie Mall is today. The Mall took less than a year to complete and on Freedom Day, 27 April 2017, exactly a week ago, Randfontein saw the birth of a mall that was once said to be just a dream.

George Papavarnavos (developer), Jimmy Pappas (developer assistant), Pierre Theron (Jodan Construction) and Wilbur Harris (Bantry Construction) in October 2016.

As expected, by 7am the Mall was packed with local residents who were eager and excited to see what all the fuss was about. It all started with a prayer followed by various speeches from George Papavarnavos (the developer of and investor in the project), Jimmy Pappas (who waited nine years for his dream of the Tambotie Mall to realise) and the mayor himself.

The national anthem followed and then came the finale where Mzi Khumalo, Randfontein Executive Mayor accompanied by George, Jimmy, Roy Harris (long-time Randfontein Publicity Association member) and Violet Noina-Mzondeki, Speaker in the Council Chambers, cut the ribbon to make everything official. A couple of hours later, one was lucky to find an empty parking spot.

Members of the Pappas family: Jean Pappas (Jimmy’s wife) with Gladys Apostoleris, and Maria and Andoni Gerasimatos in the front at the sod-turning ceremony in April 2016.

Of course many shops were running major discounts in the hope of attracting customers, but other than the excitement of the opening of the mall, there were those who were really grateful for the job opportunities created, as seen in the video below.
