The resident, a woman, said she took the photo and posted it on social media. It soon went viral on local Whatsapp groups, and residents were allegedly furious. The Herald spoke to the neighbour of the woman, who also wishes to remain anonymous, on Wednesday morning, 3 May.

The neighbour confirmed that the couple was spotted allegedly dropping off the cats next to the road in Merwe Road. Just as they drove off, the couple apparently realised they’d been seen.

One of the witnesses said she took the vehicle’s registration number and obtained information about the couple. She shared this with the Herald, but we will not reveal anything until the couple has been reached for comment.

The other witness added, “I have seen this vehicle pass here several times.”

Where are the cats now? The first witness said some children attempted to catch them but they ran into the nearby veld. Anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of the cats can contact Maritza van Zyl on 011 693 3671 or email us at randfonteinherald@caxton.co.za
