Five killed in road crashes during long weekend

Five dead and five injured after another horror long weekend on our roads.

Carletonville/Westonaria — Five people lost their lives and another five were injured in three separate road accidents during the recent long weekend.

On Thursday night, 27 April, a man was killed after a head-on collision between a light motor vehicle and truck at the N12/ R28 split in Westonaria.

When ER24 paramedics arrived on the scene they found the truck parked on the side of the road. The wrecked light motor vehicle was found in the middle of the road. Upon closer inspection, the paramedics discovered the body of a man trapped inside the light motor vehicle.

Russel Meiring, ER24 spokesperson said, “Unfortunately the man had already succumbed to his multiple injuries. Nothing could be done for him and he was declared dead on the scene.”

The driver of the truck was assessed and found to have escaped injury. The exact cause of the collision is not yet known.

Then on Sunday morning, 30 April, four people were killed and two others sustained moderate injuries when their vehicle overturned on the R501 near East Driefontein in Carletonville.

Werner Vermaak said, “At approximately 7am, paramedics from ER24 arrived on the scene where they found six people who were involved in the incident.”

It is alleged that all of them were occupants of the same vehicle. Two people with fatal injuries were found inside the vehicle and another two with fatal injuries were found several metres away from the vehicle. It is believed they were ejected when the vehicle overturned.

Two other occupants were found with moderate injuries.They were treated on scene and later transported to a nearby hospital for further care.

The exact circumstances surrounding the incident are not yet known.

That same day, three people were injured when two vehicles collided after dark on the R28 in Carletonville. ER24 paramedics arrived on the scene to find both vehicles in the middle of the road.

Upon closer inspection, paramedics discovered that their patients had sustained injuries ranging from minor to moderate.

Russel Meiring, the ER24 spokesperson, said fortunately no serious or fatal injuries were reported. The patients were treated for their injuries and were thereafter transported to Lenmed Hospital for further treatment.

It is alleged that one of the vehicles had skipped the traffic lights, causing the collision.
