She explained that the domestic worker was in the house at the time of the robbery. She said the robbers were at their gate with papers in their hands under the pretense of handing the papers to the homeowner.

Although she knew not to open the gate for strangers, the robbers pretended they couldn’t hear what she was saying, so she opened the door so they could hear her better. Little did she know the men had already gained access to the property by lifting the gate off its rail, and they rushed in when she opened the door.

When the men entered the home, the domestic worker let out a shout which a neighbouring domestic worker heard, and she activated her panic button. The domestic worker who was in the house with the robbers attempted to get away from them by breaking a window, but cut her wrist on the broken glass.

The robbers then took the a television and fled the property in a silver BMW, followed by a concerned resident in a blue Kia Picanto. When the owner got home she saw blood all over the house and found her domestic worker lying down still bleeding.

When the ambulance she called for didn’t show up, the homeowner took her domestic worker to hospital where she was stabilised and transferred to a different hospital.

The domestic worker is still in hospital. She has lost the use of her pinky finger and needs to be operated on to restore its ability to move.

The owner has since warned other homeowners to have measures in place to prevent their gates from being lifted, and also to be careful when going outside to meet strangers.

The Randfontein Police are currently investigating the matter.
