#MunicipalMonday: Municipality fixes sewage issue on a public holiday

A sewage issue that has been a thorn in one family's side has finally been resolved. Watch video here:

This week’s #MunicipalMonday takes a twist after a municipal issue was swiftly sorted out by the Rand West City Local Municipality (RWCLM).

Aloe Street in Greenhills was plagued by the putrid smell of raw sewage. It was later reported to the Herald that the property it was coming from is allegedly a council house for visiting dignitaries.

The family living next to the home, Naomi and Werner de Beer, said they reported the matter in February and continued to do so but to no avail. They said it was a particular problem as they run a baby daycare and were worried about the potential health hazard lurking on their doorstep.

The drain cover was replaced after the drain was unblocked.

The Herald took up the matter and reported it to the RWCLM on Thursday, 13 April and on Monday, 17 April – a public holiday – the municipality dispatched a team to fix the issue.

The family is relieved that the issue has been resolved after months of struggling. They say all that needs to be done now is to get security guards to protect the vacant property once more.

When the Herald visited the house today, the drain was unblocked, sealed and some of the property’s grass was cut.
