VIDEO: Taking children off the streets for Easter

NGO that looks after underprivileged children in Mohlakeng Extension 4 held an Easter celebration for their beneficiaries.

Ebuhleni Home-Based Care, a non-governmental organisation (NGO) that looks after underprivileged children in Mohlakeng Extension 4 held an Easter celebration for their beneficiaries.

The NGO was founded in 2008 and by 2010, they were registered and doing everything by the book. They now have 186 beneficiaries whom they assist with school clothes, and provide with breakfast and lunch on a daily basis.

Nzimeni Funeka, the founder of the organisation, went as far as resigning from his job on a mine to pursue what he says is his calling.

“Ever since we started, we have been self-sustaining. We’re in need of sponsors because we function through donations received from various sources, but we’re getting there,” said Nzimeni.

Nzimeni is not the only person in his family with a dream to uplift his community – his four sons and wife assist him with his good work.

“My wife, my wife does everything,” he said.

The celebration kicked off on Easter Friday and ended on Family Day. Some of the goodies for the period were sponsored by ITNA, Uncle Harry’s, Captain Liquor Warehouse, Docville Pharmacy, Cartridge Cave, Best Buy Motors and Randfontein Auto Spares.

Ebuhleni’s child beneficiaries were treated to a bouncy house, board games and soccer.

“We decided to do something nice for our children. It’s also a way to keep them off the streets during Easter time. It can get dangerous out there,” he said.
