Police nab fleeing robbers

Police nab robbers making a getaway after the Markhams robbery.

The Westonaria Police have once again nabbed suspects trying to make a quick getaway through their town.

In broad daylight on Tuesday, 11 April, approximately six robbers targeted Markhams in Carletonville. The suspects fled the scene in a white Toyota Quantum after taking cellphones and clothing from the store.

According to Warrant Officer Raymond Sebonyane, Westonaria Police’s spokesperson, a call for a look-out was sent out for the vehicle shortly after they fled.

“After a while, the Quantum was spotted by the Westonaria Police. Constables David Phandlela and Leonard Maluleke tried to stop the vehicle, but it did not stop,” Sebonyane said.

He said when the realised the vehicle was not going to stop, they chased them down and eventually caught up to them.

“Two suspects, aged 25 and 30, were arrested and property was recovered with the help of the West Rand Flying Squad,” he said.

Officers who recovered the goods:

• Warrant Officer Frans Manyelo

• Warrant Officer Kgakgamatso Mashete

• Warrant Officer Machoene Setati (Bekkersdal Police)

• Constable Siyabonga Mhlungu

They recovered the goods on the R28 next to the Simunye Livestock Farm.

Colonel Selvan Moonsamy, station commander of the Westonaria Police, and the Visible Policing commander, Lieutenant Colonel Hazel Makhafola applauded the officers for a job well done.
