National Columnist’s Day

Honour the contribution of a newspaper columnist on #NationalColumnist’sDay

18 April is annually celebrated as National Columnists’ Day and is an opportunity to honour all newspaper columnists and their contribution to the truth in black and white.

Columnists have the ability to inspire a plethora of emotions, often resulting in action. What many may not realise is that is their intent. If readers are not moved by their column, they have not done their job.

Some columnists can lighten the mood or play a role with their own flavour of humour or satire. Others strictly provide a different perspective, sticking to hard facts and solid research. Whatever their style or approach, each columnist’s hard work connects them to the world.

The National Society of Newspaper Columnists – which was founded in 1977 – sponsors and promotes the annual celebration of National Columnist’s Day. 18 April was chosen as the annual celebration in memory of the well-known columnist and 1944 Pulitzer Prize winner, Ernie Pyle.

Celebrate today by acknowledging all the people who do the research and write the columns we rely on being available for us to read each day.

Share the name of your favourite columnist or newspaper writer on social media using #NationalColumnist’sDay.
