#WhatToDoWednesday: What to do at an accident scene

Know when to act and when to stand back.

In light of the recent horror crash which ended the lives of two school boys, the Herald spoke to Quick Response Services (QRS) about what to do on an accident scene for our #WhatToDoWednesday series.

“It’s human nature to want to help and get involved in a rescue operation,” said Denver Ramnarian, QRS founder.

One of the first rules he gave about emergency situations is to know when to act and when to stand back.

He explained that standing back doesn’t necessarily mean not doing anything. Standing back can mean calling an ambulance and making sure to give the emergency service accurate information about the scene.

“Knowing the emergency numbers in your area can save a life,” he said.

If the situation calls for immediate medical intervention, Denver said potential rescuers can call a medical professional to guide them through an emergency to get the injured person help.

Denver went on to say that safety is one of the most important factors when on an accident scene. He said if for any reason the scene feels unsafe, there should be no reason to approach it.

For smokers, he said, it is important not to smoke on a scene as there may be leaking fuel present.

When it comes to victims, he said not to move them unnecessarily, as this may cause them more harm. “Rather leave them in the position that they are found in and wait for trained professionals to move them,” he said.

For biker victims, he said not to remove their helmet as doing so could cause damage to the neck and spine.

“If the person is having a seizure, move objects away from him/ her and give him/ her space to move on the floor. Do not attempt to put anything into the patient’s mouth,” he said.
