A Simunye resident, Dennis van den Berg, was recently nearly scammed on a popular job-search website.
Van den Berg said he has been searching for a job on the website for a while and finally found a job at a local hospital.
When he called the person who put up the advert, he said Van den Berg could have the job if he paid R1 500.
“I thought something wasn’t right so I called the hospital and asked them if they had any job openings. They said ‘No’ and told me they had received a call the day before from someone else asking why they should pay to get a job,” he said.
He said he now does not trust the website as all his information is on it and could be accessed by potential scamsters.
“I’m scared to look for more work through the website. What if they find my address and do something to my family?” he said.
Van den Berg said he has come forward in order to warn other job seekers against being scammed.
“I’m looking for work because I’m struggling and if I get scammed I’ll have even less than I have now,” he explained.
Van den Berg said he has reported the job as a scam and has also warned the hospital about their name being used in connection with scams.
The Herald has attempted to make contact with the scamster but to no avail. Van den Berg also made an attempt while the Herald interviewed him but the call kept going to voicemail.
