Breaking: Back to dirt roads for Randfontein

Mayor comes under fire after making shocking decision.

The Rand West City Local Municipality (RWCLM) Executive Mayor has recently come under fire after announcing that the town’s tarred roads will be lifted to return to the older dirt roads.

The decision came after the wave of pothole complaints after recent heavy rains. The project has since been called the #BackToBasics project by the RWCLM.

Mzi Khumalo, Rand West City Local Municipality Executive Mayor, said the town will go back to what it looked like years back.

“We’ve noticed residents have been complaining about potholes recently and I have a solution – a solution I hope the town will welcome with open arms. Randfontein’s roads will be lifted and will be left to make dirt roads. They will be scraped once every few months,” the Mayor said.

When the Herald interviewed Mayor Mzi Khumalo, he was adamant about the decision and said, “This is going to happen. The costs involved in fixing tar roads are far more than lifting and scraping them once in a while,” he said.

While the Mayor said the main roll-out of the new project has yet to happen, one Randfontein road near Aureus has already unexpectedly been lifted.

Khumalo announced that Greenhills will be one of the first areas affected by the decision. “The badly potholed roads in Greenhills will be the first to go,” Khumalo explained.

List of streets to be done as of Friday, 7 April:

• Owl Street

• Raven Street

• Polomino Street

• Fir Street

• Mimosa Avenue

While the RWCLM has only made the names of five streets public to date, they said the full list will be made public in the near future.
