Winter is coming … get your flu jab now

'Tis the season for flu – Why you should get vaccinated, and how to prevent flu this winter.

Residents are urged/ advised to have themselves vaccinated against the flu, as it is said to be the most effective way to prevent the disease.

According to Waheed Abdurahman, a Clicks Pharmacist, “In South Africa, the best time to get your flu vaccine is before the end of April, before the flu season sets in. The earlier the better, as it takes 10 to 12 days to build up your immunity. However, if you have missed this window period, the vaccine can still be administerd at any time during the winter season.”

Flu is a viral infection, which at the very least could land you in bed with a high fever and aches and pains, or at worst, with respiratory complications such as pneumonia. It should not be confused with the common cold, which is a much milder condition.

The flu vaccine is updated every year by the World Health Organisation (Who) and incorporates some of the most severe or virulent flu strains that need to be warded off for the season.

Anyone can get vaccinated, except babies younger than six months and anyone who already has a fever, has shown a past reaction to a vaccine, or is allergic to eggs.

The majority of medical aids cover the cost of the flu vaccine for their members, although some schemes only cover individuals who might be at high risk for complications. These include the elderly, people with chronic health conditions such as diabetes or heart disease, pregnant women, children aged six months upwards and people with lowered immunity due to HIV, TB or cancer therapy.

In addition to having a flu jab, Abdurahman recommends practising good health habits, such as washing hands often and avoiding people who are sick.

Try the following tips to help prevent flu this season:

• Vaccinate – get the flu vaccination to protect yourself and your family

• Wash your hands regularly – cover up when you cough or sneeze and wash your hands regularly with a waterless hand sanitiser to keep germs at bay

• Maintain a healthy lifestyle – a healthy diet and lifestyle helps keep your immune system in top shape and ready to fight the virus

• Boost your immune system with natural medicines like echinacea or African potato extract, as well as multi-vitamins which include Vitamins C and D

• Avoidance – Try to stay away from those who are sick, and as far as possible, do not share personal items. Be wary of crowded spaces where exposure may be high
