Is the snow rumour true?

5cm fell in Lesotho on 25 March.

Readers have expressed their concerns about a rumour that it is going to snow in Lesotho, which will affect Gauteng’s temperatures for the worse.

The Herald can confirm that it is only a rumour. According to Snow Report SA, 5cm of snow fell on the highest mountains in Lesotho on 25 March but no snow has been forecasted for the foreseeable future. Meteorologist Kobus Botha’s website also indicated that day temperatures in the Johannesburg area will remain in the 20s and 30s but early-morning and evening temperatures will gradually decrease as expected for this time of the year.

Retired academic and weather watcher, Professor Peet Pienaar, believes that there is a close link between the activities of the Sun and atmospheric temperature, which directly affects weather conditions on Earth. He told Landbouweekblad that in 2017 the summer rainfall regions can also expect good rain towards the end of April and in May. He predicted rain and snow for the same region towards the end of June and the beginning of July. He based his predictions on the presence of spots on the Sun.
