What do you want to be when you grow up?

Various governmental and private institutions visited a Randfontein school to give the learners insight into various career paths they can follow.

Matriculants from Simunye Secondary School (SSS) were visited by various governmental and private institutions to tell them what careers they can pursue after school.

The Bekkersdal Police, the South African Defence Force, the Department of Justice and a number of local mines visited the school to give them insight into the various career paths they can follow.

Each of the departments had brochures learners could consult before applying to various institutions and working on their plans for life after school.

The event was organised by The Message non-profit organisation (NPO), which is based in Bekkersdal. The NPO deals with youth development and has been operating in Bekkersdal for the past three years.

Vongani Shirinda and Virginia Amod Sahib from the Department of Justice educated matriculants about the justice system in South Africa.

The Message works in all spheres of youth development in Bekkersdal – from local economic development all the way to spiritual upliftment.

Pauline Simamane, co-founder of The Message, said before matriculants can think of careers after school, they have to hit their books, and hit them hard.

“This is not time to play; it’s not play time. This is time to learn,” she said.

She said she hopes to see the SSS class of 2017 end their matric year with a 100 per cent pass rate.

The school has for years been hovering above a 70 per cent pass rate, which in itself is an achievement, considering the school’s lack of resources.

Last year, Patrick Mraji from SSS received an award for being the top achiever in physical science. The school also raked in various other top positions and Pauline wants to see the school’s matriculants give 2017 their all.
