PICS: Truck set alight in protest action on R28

About 300 residents took to the R28 to protest against poor service delivery during the weekend.

Protest action in Zenzele reached boiling point after a truck was set alight by a mob of protesters on the R28 between Zuurbekom and Zenzele on Friday, 17 March.

The incident occurred a day after an application to hold a planned service delivery march was denied. Regardless of this, the mob protested on the R28 from about 5pm on Friday.

Captain Appel Ernst, Randfontein Police’s spokesperson, confirmed that approximately 300 protesters barricaded the R28 connecting Zuurbekom and Zenzele, and set a truck alight. The R28 was subsequently closed, and police diverted traffic to the R559 and N12.

The Randfontein Police were on scene to contain the situation and to make sure no more property was burned.

The road was reopened at 10pm, after the protest calmed down somewhat. Two Nyala riot vehicles and a number of members of the Public Order Policing unit were dispatched to monitor the situation thereafter.
