The Herald as well as the Police have been inundated with calls about a service delivery march which would disrupt traffic on the R28 on Thursday.
According to Captain Appel Ernst, Randfontein Police spokesperson said the residents’ application for the march was denied.
The march was planned for Thursday, 16 March from 6am when residents would march to the Rand West City Local Municipality to hand over a memorandum.
They planned to disturb and disrupt schools, employees going to work, taxi operations and business operations. They also requested the R28 to close to accommodate the march.
Ernst said after the motion was denied, disgruntled residents of Zenzele subsequently took to the streets of the area and stoned passing vehicles and barricaded internal streets with burning tyres.
“This did not affect any major routes,” Ernst confirmed.
The Randfontein Police and Public Order Policing were deployed to the area to monitor the situation.
“Stones were raining down on members patrolling and one member sustained a minor head injury as a result. One suspect has so far been arrested for public violence,” She said.
Brigadier Mashole Jacob Manamela, Randfontein Police Station Commander said the situation is tense but is constantly monitored.
