Carryou is planting for winter

'We intend to plant spinach, onions, cabbage and carrots.'

Carryou Ministry’s Vleikop farming programme is once again producing fresh produce after a violent storm caused extensive damage last year.

The tunnels in which the produce is grown were damaged months ago and seriously curtailed food production.

The programme supplies food to the Carryou Elandsvlei and Toekomsrus Drop-in Centre, which feeds approximately 300 children a day.

We were able to limp along but couldn’t produce the quantities we were used to. We also faced water problems,” said Stephen Ngakane, manager at the facility.

Carryou had to find funding to make repairs to the facility to get production back on track. Carryou co-founder, Tony Jamison stepped up to the plate and personally provided the more than R20 000 required to fix the damage.

“When children are in need, I cannot stand idly and do nothing,” Tony said.

After recent heavy rains, farmers at the Carryou Vleikop Farming Programme have been battling to ready the ground for planting winter crops.

After getting funding, the recent heavy rains and sudden hot weather resulted in a never-ending battle preparing the soil while getting rid of invasive plants. Stephan was hard at work digging out the invaders to prepare the soil for the winter crops.

In the meantime, Stephan managed produce tomatoes, which he is now harvesting and selling.

“We intend to plant spinach, onions, cabbage and carrots,” Tony said. He is working with Stephan to ensure future harvests.
