Social development urges public to make use of rehab centres

'Let us work together to eradicate drugs'

The Gauteng Department of Social Development (GDSD) is taking on substance abuse in Randfontein as well as the greater West Rand.

The department has been facing substance abuse related challenges specifically in Kokosi, Fochville and said crimes have been committed to feed drug habits. As a result, the department’s West Rand office recently hosted a substance abuse prevention awareness campaign at the Kokosi Community Hall.

While addressing the community, Cynthia Sejake, a social worker from the area said, “The challenge we have in Kokosi is that many underage children are already using drugs.” She went on to say that the department is looking to create awareness about substance abuse at schools, as it significantly impacts education.

“Let’s not wait until it is too late. When you need help, please do not hesitate to come to us. We will assess and then take the patient to a medical professional; thereafter we refer them to our treatment centres,” Cynthia said.

She explained that the West Rand currently has two treatment centres, i.e. the Ithemba Rehab Centre at the Sterkfontein Hospital, and the Life Recovery Centre in Randfontein.

The department not only sends patients to rehab but also assists them with an after-care service to avoid relapse.

“Let us work together to eradicate drugs,” she concluded.
