The Herald has reported on progress at the park since funds were allocated to it by the Gauteng Provincial Government in March, 2015.

That’s right, Randfontein and even Westonaria residents, soon there will be a place you can go to get in touch with nature.

The sanctuary is located on Desert Street and boasts offices, a nature education centre as well as a fully equipped café.

The two buildings at the entrance of the sanctuary are built in such a way that they gather rain water which runs to on-site Jojo tanks. The water is then used for irrigation.

The construction of the buildings at the sanctuary created a number of jobs and equipped workers, many of whom were Community Work Project (CWP) workers, with skills to do other jobs after the completion of the sanctuary.

Many of the materials used for and around the buildings were made on site. The most notable of these is the paving stones all around the buildings.

The real treat at the sanctuary is the walking trail, which takes approximately 30 minutes to complete. The trail reaches the edge of the sanctuary which has an unofficial bunny park. Craig Harrison, DA Ward 7 councillor said next to the bunny park, the sanctuary will soon have its own sanctuary.

Craig said a date has not been set for the opening as yet but said it should not be long now. “I’m excited for the opening. I can’t wait to walk the trail. Once it opens, I plan to have a number of walks to create awareness about the sanctuary,” he said.
