VIDEO: Homelake subway now pool of trash

This illegal dump site in Homelake poses a danger to learners passing by.

On Angelier Street in Homelake, the old subway linking the area to the Central Business District (CBD) is now filled with rubbish of all kinds.

The former subway-cum-illegal-dumping-site has been closed off for years, however it has at some point been reopened by vandals.

The subway entrance was closed years ago, after the erection of the mall on the other side of the railway line, but ever since, residents and passers-by have been using the slit in the ground as a bin.

DA Ward Councillor, Craig Harrison said he has reported the matter to the Rand West City Local Municipality (RWCLM) and heard nothing back.

He later found that the section being used as an illegal dumping site actually belongs to Metrorail. He subsequently contacted them to inform them about the matter but heard nothing back from them either.

The illegal dumping site is located in a really problematic area and poses an immediate danger to learners and passers-by. It is located at the entrance of the railway station, and near to Hoërskool Riebeeckrand. The fall to the bottom could be deadly as it is several metres deep. In addition, after the recent heavy rains, it has filled with water, which makes it twice as dangerous.
