Mohlakeng innovation outputs to increase

The Gauteng Premier delivers on his first promise on the West Rand.

Gauteng Premier, David Makhura is looking to promote a culture of innovation in Mohlakeng.

After his State of the Province Address (Sopa) on Monday, 20 February, he launched an eKasiLab in the area.

The lab is located at 2521 Ralerata Street, Mohlakeng.

The eKasiLab programme intends to support entrepreneurs in the information communications technology (ICT), manufacturing, green economy, biosciences and creative industries.

The eKasiLab is a business incubation programme that provides support services to township entrepreneurs and give them the same services and facilities as those offered in the prestigious Innovation Hub in Tshwane.

The core functions of the labs are to develop township-based youth aligned with the e-Government Department priorities as well as increased innovative outputs in the community.

The facility is not the first of its kind. There are other labs in Soweto, Garankuwa and Alexandra.

There is a provincial commitment to launch more such facilities in other Gauteng areas such as the Vaal, Sebokeng, Tembisa and Mamelodi.

In his address, Makhura conveyed that the Gauteng Provincial Government will be putting more focus on small black-owned businesses as well as township enterprises, and the Rand West City Local Municipality (RWCLM) was the first recipient of this after his speech.
