Government visits West Rand domestic violence shelters

Gauteng Social Development MEC Nandi Mayathula-Khoza visits centres for survivors of domestic and sexual violence on the West Rand.

The Gauteng Provincial Government (GPG) visited several centres for survivors of domestic and sexual violence in Krugersdorp and Randfontein on the West Rand on Saturday, 25 February, to raise awareness of the abuse of women and girls.

Gauteng Social Development MEC, Nandi Mayathula-Khoza, led a team of government officials as part of the global fight against gender-based violence, as the United Nations Campaign UNiTE to end violence against women has proclaimed the 25th of each month as “Orange Day.”

“We must make the 25th of each month bright and optimistic like the colour orange which represents a future free of violence against women and girls. The Orange Day calls upon activists, governments, and communities to mobilise people and highlight issues relevant to preventing and ending violence against women and girls.

“We must not only do this once a year, on 25 November (the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women), but every month,” she said.

The shelter for women and children in Krugersdorp was first to be visited, between 10am and noon. The MEC will then make her way to the Carrol Shaw shelter in Brandvlei, Randfontein, where she will visit from 1pm until 3pm.
