Thank you Randfontein – Struggling family

Struggling family overwhelmed by town's kindness.

The Herald recently reported about a 77-year-old woman, her 50-year-old son and her 19-year-old granddaughter who not only have been struggling financially, but live with cancer and multiple sclerosis.

After the Herald published the story, phone calls started coming in, and the community really pulled together in an effort to help the family.

As we speak, community members are still dropping off clothing for the family. Just yesterday (20 February), Ria Khunz dropped off some shirts for the man. The Herald even received a phone call from a woman who said she could help get in contact with specialists in Pretoria. The family is awaiting feedback.

The one woman the Herald met, said she could not let the elderly woman sleep on two couches pushed together. She kindly donated money.

One woman brought three boxes of groceries, and some community members even visited the family and donated food, clothing and so much more. Grootjie se Kombuis, a restaurant on Homestead Avenue, also made a huge difference in their lives and helped with delivering the groceries to their house. They are also sponsoring the man’s much-needed monthly vitamins.

The man told the Herald they received beds, food, clothes, money, vitamins for the family and a couch. He thanked the community for the blessings they have given him and his family. He said they are overwhelmed by how good people have been. His family was losing hope of ever receiving help or love from anyone, but the people of Randfontein have made such a huge difference in their lives.

“May God richly bless you for your kindness. You have made a family cry because you choose to care instead of walking away. Shalom,” he said. He also thanked the Herald for embarking on this community project.

If anybody wants to contact and continue to help the family, please contact Clinton Botha (Editor) or Maritza van Zyl (Journalist) on 011 693 3671.
