Donkey skins valued at over R2m found on farm

Police seize donkey skins valued at over R2 million on farm in Randfontein.

Police recently found a number of donkey skins to the estimated value of R2 250 000 at a smallholding in Brandvlei.

The discovery came after the Stock Theft and National Crime Intelligence Units conducted a crime intelligence operation in the area.

“The units received an anonymous tip-off about a smelly warehouse on a plot in Brandvlei”, said Constable Lucky Matome, the Tarlton Police spokesperson.

Both units acted on the information, which led them to the discovery of a large number of animal skins stuffed into a storeroom.

“During the preliminary investigation it was established that the storeroom was being leased to a foreign national who was not found at the premises. It is alleged that the donkeys could have been illegally slaughtered for their skins,” Matome said.

Two cases were opened under sections 6 and 7 of the Stock Theft Act 57 of 1959, and another was opened under the Meat Safety Act 40 of 2000.

No arrests have been made thusfar, however. The police urge anyone who has any information that might lead to the arrest of the suspect(s) to contact Captain Ockert van der Walt on 012 734 7100 or the Crime Stop Line on 08600 10 111.
