Don’t wait until the last minute to service your vehicle

The long weekends are around the corner, so don’t wait until the last minute to service your vehicle, the Motor Industry Workshop Association warns.

Every year the number of accidents and fatalities on our roads over long weekends and especially during the Easter break is alarming.

Vishal Premlall of the Motor Industry Workshop Association (MIWA), said all drivers need to take servicing their vehicles seriously ahead of the holidays.

“Vehicles that have not been serviced and are not roadworthy but are used to make long road trips are a hazard, not only to their passengers but to other drivers too. A tyre blow-out, for example, can result in pieces of rubber flying up onto the road, hitting other vehicles and causing accidents as drivers swerve to avoid the debris,” said Premlall.

He highly recommended that vehicle owners get their vehicles checked and serviced before venturing out on the road. “Leaving it until a day or two before departure is not a good idea. What motorists don’t realise is that should maintenance be needed on their vehicle and spare parts are not in stock, these need to be ordered. This could take several days, if they are available at all. It is risky leaving things to the last minute and could put a real damper on holiday plans,” said Premlall.

During a service, mechanics will do a thorough check of the vehicle, which will include a road test and an assessment of the following parts:

• Lights

• Suspension

• Drive lines

• Brakes

• Tyres, including the spare and tools

• Fluid levels

• Wipers and windscreen

• V belts

• Exhaust

If a problem is identified, the mechanic will be able to advise the vehicle owner and provide a quote for repairs needed. Premlall strongly recommended using an accredited workshop.

“Believe it or not, we are a few weeks away from the long weekend in March and the Easter weekend in April. Don’t wait. Get your vehicle in tip top condition now,” he concluded.
