Suspect hides in victim’s home for 16 days

Domestic violence twist in Randfontein – Victim harbours attacker for 16 days.

A woman, 24, was arrested after she supplied the Bekkersdal Police with false information when opening a case regarding domestic violence.

According to Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, Bekkersdal Police spokesperson, she reported an assault case against her boyfriend on Wednesday, 1 February after which local detectives started their investigation.

With her supposed help, the detectives tried to locate her boyfriend on several occasions but without success.

Detective Constable Jonas Manamela later discovered the boyfriend was hiding at the woman’s home and that she was well aware of it, but did not contact police.

On Thursday, 16 February, the boyfriend was traced and arrested at the woman’s home.

He made a brief appearance in the Westonaria Magistrates’ Court the next day.

The woman was also arrested and charged with defeating the ends of justice. She was to appear in the same court on Monday, 20 February.

Colonel Mbangwa Nkhwashu, commander of the Bekkersdal Police Station said the incident should serve as an example for the community.

“A person cannot lay a charge and later mislead the police as they attend to serious matters on a daily basis,” he explained.
