Hijacker arrested after car chase

Local police arrested a hijacker after a car chase over the weekend.

A middle-aged man was arrested by the Bekkersdal Police after a hijacking and high-speed car chase at about 11am on the N12, Westonaria, on Friday, 17 February.

Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, Bekkersdal Police’s spokesperson, said Warrant Officer Reuben Ngewana made the arrest while performing his routine patrol duties around the N12.

Ngewana was near the N12 when he received information about an HP 100 bakkie being pursued by a minibus taxi with approximately three occupants in it.

He immediately responded to the information and as he was driving on a gravel road making his way to the N12, he spotted the two vehicles heading eastwards on the N12.

The officer followed the vehicles all the way to the Waterworks traffic light. There the driver of the HP 100 jumped out of the vehicle and ran into the Waterworks informal settlement.

With assistance from the community, Ngewana managed to arrest the driver who was charged with hijacking and is expected to appear in the Westonaria Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 20 February.

The Bekkersdal station commander, Colonel Mbangwa Nkhwashu, applauded both the officer and the community for their part in apprehending and arresting the hijacker.

“This breakthrough will surely minimise the hijacking cases reported around the N12,” Nkhwashu said.
