#ThrowBackThursday: Dangerous Greenhills cemetery revisited

The Herald revisited the Greenhills cemetery where conditions have only deteriorated for this week's #ThrowBackThursday.

The Herald has previously reported on the dangers that lurk in the Greenhills Cemetery, and matters have only become worse since.

The cemetery’s concrete palisade fencing was broken down late last year, creating openings for ill-doers to roam free into the cemetery.

The walls around one of the targeted houses are being raised to deter future housebreakers.

Various grave dressings have subsequently been stolen and reports have emerged about robberies and attacks within the cemetery.

Recently, houses have been broken into and the housebreakers have allegedly been using the cemetery as a clever means of escape.

According to Peter Dick, DA Ward 9 councillor, five houses have been broken into in the span of a week. He said after investigating that he’d learned more about housebreakers’ modus operandi.

Dick explained that housebreakers would park their getaway cars in the cemetery, wait until dark and use openings in the fencing to break into houses and make a quick getaway via the cemetery.

Bushes between the cemetery and nearby houses are cause for concern as they make for an easy hiding place after breaking into a home.

He said the gates of the cemetery do not have locks on them and there are no lights, which makes for the perfect escape route for housebreakers.

“I’ve since bought a lock for the cemetery gate and have asked staff to lock up at certain times to prevent anyone from coming in and going out,” Dick said.

Bushes between the cemetery and nearby houses are cause for concern as they make for an easy hiding place after breaking into a home.

A meeting with the Sector 4 Community Policing Forum (CPF) has been arranged for Thursday, 16 February to address the housebreakings and find a way forward.
