Avante Primary School’s principal, Hennie Fourie, organised a special day for his learners, dueing which they got the chance to honour the late Joost van der Westhuizen.

Joost passed away on Monday, 6 February at the age of 45, after losing his battle with motor neuron disease (MND). He was a former Springbok who played in 89 tests and scored 38 tries. He also represented the Bulls. A public service was held in his honour at Loftus Versveld on Friday, 10 February.

The learners were more than happy to join in, and wore green Springbok jerseys or green T-shirts. Chane van Deventer, a teacher at the school, said the whole school is deeply saddened by Joost’s passing.
“The learners call him a rugby legend,” said Chane.
