VIDEO: The life of people sleeping in toilet stalls

Safety of sports club as well as illegal occupants living there at risk after council visits sport stadium. Watch here:

In the overgrown vegetation in a forgotten section of the Greenhills Stadium, approximately six people live in the toilet stalls of two outbuildings.

The outbuildings are located around the Randmark Run, Walk and Cycle Club as well as the Randfontein Ringball Club.

Ellik de Lange, DA Ward 6 councillor has reported the matter to Mzi Khumalo, Rand West City Local Municipality’s (RWCLM) Executive Mayor and is awaiting a response.

Other than the fact that it is illegal to live on these premises, De Lange said it is a health and safety hazard.

In one of the outbuildings, two toilet stalls are taken up with mattresses and blankets. The outbuilding used to be a male toilet and where the urinal is, a basket of laundry, food and rubbish have been placed. The stench emanating from the room would cause even the strongest of stomachs to churn.

De Lange said a few months ago a man was found dead in one of the outbuildings, which makes the matter even more of a concern for him.

De Lange went on to say that not only do the people living there put their health at risk, they also put their safety and the safety of sports club members at risk. He explained they do so by making holes in the gate around the sports club. He said during the Randfontein Show, the various holes in the gate will allow uninvited guests into the showgrounds.

In addition to trespassing, De Lange said various steel structures have been broken off and stolen at the clubs and recently, toilets were broken down, presumably by the people living on the premises.

De Lange said he is determined to rectify the situation and is waiting for a response from the mayor to see what the way forward is.
