Know what to do after being in an accident

Know not just the admin aspects but the medical aspects as well.

When involved in an accident, do you know what to do as far as the medical aspects are concerned?

Premier private emergency medical care provider ER24 has issued tips for motorists should they come across or are involved in an accident.

The first tip they give is to stop the vehicle. Do not to leave the scene but get to a safe area on the side of the road to prevent more accidents. Switch on your hazards.

In terms of paperwork, get details such as the name and address as well as the driver’s licence details of the other driver. Provide yours as well. The incident should be reported to the police within 24 hours.

They key is to remain calm, do a head count of every person in your car and assess the situation to determine the best course of action. Look out for people trapped in vehicles, whether there is fire or victims lying in the road.

Call emergency services or instruct someone to do so immediately. Memorise information you will be requested to provide, as this information could save a life.

If you know first aid or CPR, start immediately where it is needed. If a person is bleeding heavily, prevent blood from getting into contact with your skin and use gauze to apply pressure to the wound. If there are no sterile dressings or gauze available, use a towel, blanket or clothing to put pressure on the wound.

Do not move injured people unless their safety depends on it (if the vehicle is on fire or if there are other threats).

In the event of a fire, use a fire extinguisher. One should always carry one in one’s vehicle.

When assisting a patient, always ensure your own safety.

Guard children and ensure they are safe or supervised on an accident scene.

Lastly, when passing an accident scene and you believe you are equipped to help, stop where your vehicle is safe and does not pose further danger or cause an obstruction.
