Mayor pays for top students’ studies

The only thing beneficiaries have to take care of is accommodation.

The Rand West City Local Municipality (RWCLM) recently honoured the top matriculants in town.

Rand West which falls under the West Rand is one of the three areas which put together a matric pass rate of 91,2 percent. The West Rand has managed for the past four years to get a pass rate over 90 percent which has beaten the rest of the province in the matric pass rate game for the past four years.

Two town schools in the Rand West area have achieved 100 percent pass rates for the past few years namely Hoërskool Jan Viljoen and Randfontein High School (RHS). Hoërskool Riebeeckrand may not have gotten a 100 percent matric pass rate, however, they did have a learner, Sasha-Lee Roestorff, who attained 11 distinctions.

Mzi Khumalo, RWCLM Executive Mayor handed out bursaries to 80 top students.

The students will have their tuition and prescribed books paid for by the RWCLM. The only thing beneficiaries will be responsible for is the payment of accommodation. In addition to bursaries, the RWCLM handed out 34 laptops and gift vouchers to the 34 tops students in Rand West.

The municipality said they strive to make education fashionable and say education is the only tool they can equip their people with in order to combat poverty.
