The Gold Alliance, comprising Gold Fields and Sibanye Gold, last week joined the Rand West City Local Municipality (RWCLM) in congratulating matric learners from schools in the community for their academic excellence during 2016.
The Gold Alliance donated 35 laptops with a total value of R200 000 and educational vouchers worth R19 000 during the Rand West City Mayoral Bursary Awards event held at the Westonaria Banquet Hall on 26 January. Top-performing learners as well as the best Mathematics and Science teachers within the boundaries of the RWCLM were the lucky recipients.
Mzi Khumalo, Executive Mayor, also awarded bursaries totalling R3 million to 80 students.
Bonny Sebola, Gold Fields vice-president: Stakeholder and Community Relations, spoke on behalf of the Gold Alliance.
“As mining companies we take great interest in top-achieving learners in Maths and Science, because we look to you as our future mining engineers and other professions in the mining industry,” he said.
During 2016, Sibanye invested R43,4 million in bursaries, learnerships and internships, and the South Deep Education Trust spent over R9 million in bursaries and scholarship. Career expos were held together with the municipality to encourage diversified careers through education.
“Our doors are always open for the youths of the West Rand. When we see such tangible results, we are motivated to do more to help build our country through these young exceptional minds. I hope these laptops will assist you as you further your education. Continue to make us proud,” Sebola added.
Since October 2015, the Alliance has been working with the RWCLM and local community organisations on programmes aimed at job creation and community development. This is in addition to the companies’ commitments in terms of their Mining Charter Social and Labour Plans.
