Horrifying discovery: parts of the body of a foetus

Police make horrific discovery of buried baby body parts on a plot in Randfontein.

The Randfontein Police are investigating a case of concealment of birth after they found parts of a foetus in a shallow grave on a plot in Randfontein South.

The horrific incident was brought to the attention of the police on Tuesday, 25 January at approximately 2pm.

According to Captain Appel Ernst, Randfontein Police’s spokesperson, when police arrived they were informed by residents that a woman in the area had aborted her baby. They later directed the officers to a shallow grave in the area where parts of a foetus were found in the ground.

“The remains were removed to a local mortuary where DNA tests will be conducted,” Ernst said.

Warrant Officer Lindie Breytenbach is investigating the matter and is urging everyone with more information to come to the fore to assist in the investigation. She can be contacted on 011 278 8110.

This incident is the fifth of its kind in Randfontein over the past year, the earliest incident having occurred in July, 2016.

Jetta Beaufort, a DA councillor in Toekomsrus, had a similar incident in her area in 2015 and is still fighting for the issue to be addressed by eliminating places in which people feel they are out of the public eye, especially at dumping sites, given that three of the five incidents took place at dumping sites across town.

In town, two baby sanctuaries were opened in a period of a few months, apparently to address this problem.

The Just In Time Baby Sanctuary, where neglected or unwanted babies are looked after, was opened in August, 2016

The second haven is Door of Care and Safety, which launched its ‘baby bin’ for mothers to leave their unwanted babies in, instead of leaving them to die from exposure to the elements.

Georgina Caetano from Just In Time can be contacted on 062 045 8219 or via email on georgina@justintime.org.za, while Door of Care and Safety can be found on Facebook at Door of Care and Safety Randfontein.
