Over 220 criminals arrested on West Rand

The West Rand Cluster made 221 arrests in the last week of January for crimes ranging from murder to drug use, assault and culpable homicide.

The West Rand Cluster police were on fire last week, after making 221 arrests.

The arrests were from made from Monday, 23 to Sunday, 29 January. According to Captain Appel Ernst, Randfontein Police’s spokesperson, the arrests were the result of operations throughout the week as well as intelligence-driven initiatives within the cluster.

Some of the most notable arrests took place in Magaliesburg, Mogale City, Bekkersdal, Westonaria, Kagiso, Mogale City and Randfontein.

In Magaliesburg, West Rand detectives arrested four suspects for a house robbery and murder which occurred in December last year.

“The success was due to positive information from sources in the community,” Ernst said.

Closer to home in Bekkersdal, members of the police Crime Intelligence unit, as well as the Intervention Team arrested a criminal with 2,5kg of dagga. Police have estimated the street value of the dagga to be about R4 500.

In Kagiso, six suspects were arrested for being in possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition. Two firearms as well as numerous rounds of various kinds of ammunition were confiscated. One of the suspects arrested is also wanted for attempted murder.

In Randfontein, there was an incident of public violence in which six protesters outside the Rand West City Local Municipality were arrested for damages caused during the protest.

• Shoplifting
• Theft
• Illegal mining
• Culpable homicide
• Robbery
• Being in possession of dangerous weapons
• Contempt of court
• Attempted murder
• Murder
• Being in possession of stolen motor vehicles
• Illegal immigrant
• Fraud
• Drunken driving
• Being in possession of stolen goods
• Defeating the ends of justice
• Business robbery
• Intimidation
• House robbery

Major General Anna Mateisi, West Rand Cluster commander is satisfied with the number of arrests and said, “Clever deployment and intelligence-driven operations yielded results in all the areas in the West Rand Cluster. We appreciate the input of our communities in addressing crime.”
