WATCH: ‘Heartbeat’ of town in tatters

The Herald took a drive through Aureus – the town's industrial area – and the state of the roads was shocking.

Businesses and residents in and around Aureus have been complaining about the state of the area’s roads and one councillor is on a drive to get them fixed.

Eddie Krog, DA PR Councillor, took the Herald on a drive through what he calls the heartbeat of Randfontein – the town’s industrial area – and the state of the roads was shocking.

Krog focused specifically on Bussing Street, where a section of the beginning of the road has been completely destroyed. When it rains, the section fills up, all the potholes are submerged – and vehicles get damaged.

The road has become so bad that motorists need to drive off-road on some sections to avoid the hazards in the road.

In another section of Aureus, on Foden Road, a section of the road has worn down so badly that the pothole – which is metres in length – has worn all the way down to the ground underneath the road, which is three levels down from the tar.

Krog said it is unacceptable that nothing has been done to really fix the problem. He said besides Mercedes Road being re-tarred, other streets in the area are badly patched, and this only leads to money and time being wasted.

He added that sometimes holes don’t even get patched and people in the area try their own ways of fixing the issue with what little resources they have. At the beginning of Bussing Street, for instance, where the badly damaged section of road is, a business owner has filled the holes with stones and rocks in an attempt to level out the road.

“Something needs to be done about the roads in Aureus, especially Bussing Street, which sees a lot of traffic. It should also not just be a patch solution, the repairs need to hold. The roads in this area are becoming dangerous and something needs to be done before anything serious happens,” Krog said.
